Abstract When doing business in Asia, one is often reminded in the literature the need to plug into the Chinese business networks. These Chinese business networks stem from the intrinsic familybased nature of most of Chinese business. This paper reports a preliminary withdraw of the use of networks by Chinese export-oriented SMEs in Singapore. It examines the usefulness of the various networks to the export-oriented SMEs with the view to better(p) understand the role of these networks. It ensnare that contrary to accepted wisdom, the SMEs assemble industry-based networks, professional and association networks to be more useful that protracted family networks, social or informal networks. Introduction With the advent of globalisation, venial and medium-sized enterprises will face greater competition in their domesticated market from overseas competitors. This impact of globalization has not take flight the economies in Asia.
A recent Asian Productivity plaque study (Sithikong, 2001) revealed that one of the key challenges faced by SMEs in the fourteen-country study is increased competition that accompanies globalization. One strategy, the respondents in that study identified, was exports. As the SMEs in Asia seek to address the challenge of globalization through exports, it is anticipated that they would rely on business networks to open linkages with overseas agents, distribution and marketing channels for their products.
