In Mother Tongue, Amy Tan explains how because of her mothers improper English, people did not take her seriously. For Amys mother, English is the language barrier; but for me, Chinese is the barrier when I speak to fluent Chinese speakers. This is a problem I experienced numerous of quantifys over the years ontogeny up. The showtime of this barrier began at the age of four when my gran took me to Chinatown to buy groceries for dinner. I tried to describe to her in English I wanted a specific Chinese ringlet that was baked with honey on top, she had no idea what I was explaining. There is a Chinese name for the bun, but at the time I did not know what it was.
This was only the start of my language barrier and it would reoccur as the years went by.
Being innate(p) into a family of foreigners to this land, family members immigrate constantly from China to America. As they arrive, their English is very limited, so I would speak to them in Chinese. However, my Chinese is limited which is another result to my language barrier. There was the time I had to explain the rules of rock, account, scissors; explaining how rock beats scissors, paper beats rock and the endless cycle of it all was a challenge because I did not know how to state the reasons tail the rules of the game in Chinese.
