In the movie Saving Private Ryan Steven Spielberg effectively achieves a realistic portrayal of war. In the curtain raising scenes of this movie Spielberg presents the audience with the immediate horror of war. By the end of the scene it is clearly obvious to the audience the futility of war and the heroism of these soldiers. This is skilfully achieved through a variety of cinematic techniques.
In the commencement scene, the audience is immediately confronted with the horror of war. Spielberg wanted to portray the candor of war to the audience. I was looking for realism all the time. This has been superbly done through a variety of cinematic techniques. The use of the shaky camera, and the camera following the actions and movements of the soldiers above and chthonian water, really included the audience as if they were there, beside the soldiers and experiencing the horror and bewilderment of war. I wanted to hit the sets much like a newsreel cameraman following soldiers into war.
The sounds of the heavy artillery, bombs exploding and screaming of the soldiers passim the battle also add to the horror.
Spielberg also used the estimate of the enemy soldiers to show the mass destruction and death that was occurring. It showed that it was easy for the enemy to just shoot and kill their targets.
In the opening part of the scene, we see an old veteran of the war whom is in a French cemetery walking through it to perplex a certain grave. Whilst he is walking we see a panning shot of all the tombstones, we see a close up of the mans face where he is tearing up and the camera begins to zoom into his eyes, a flashback occurs of the soldiers all on a boat preparing to face the horror of the war.
