Plato was a philosopher who sought an perfect state. Not he, nor anyone since, has found one. Perhaps the influence he left hand for posterity was putting words into Socrates' mouth- such as the undeniable fact that truth is eternal: that "perfect ideas are perpetual and absolute because they originate with God and so are be" (Jacobson 1999 7).

One must remember that the so-called " neo immaculateal" philosophers were elitist, all being nobly born, or having achieved a status collectable to public recognition. If Aristotle had aimed his philosophy of self-realization at the "common tidy sum" it might have gone unnoticed, since their "universals" were far different

from the learned and wealthy wise men.

The contri exactlyion that these classical philosophers make to the modern student is, of course, to encourage free and unconditional thought, but based on certain boundaries and rules. What is missing, however, is the recognition that as we enter the 21st century, the idea of a college education is to brush certain boundaries and to find and establish new thoughts that contribute to the agreement of all Mankind, not merely the privileged. In a sense, then, the "classic" philosophers have set a foundation on which to build, but unanswered questions.
