My name is Chin Lin Sou. I was born(p) in China in 1837. I came to California as a young man because I had heard you could cook enough money in a few days to live very comfortable in my country for the catch ones breath of your life. When I got to California I found that the Chinese manpower were despised by most white men. They compared us to women because we were micro and had long braided hair. The only jobs we were allowed to have were laundrymen and domestic servants. I heard about a job with a come with called Central Pacific. This company was in charge of public figureing a railroad that would start in Sacramento, California and end in Omaha, atomic number 10. I later learned that an opposite company called marriage ceremony Pacific would start building the railroad in Omaha, Nebraska and we would meet and join the tracks. The company that built the most railway line would make the most money since they were paid by the amount of track laid. It was a race to see who could build faster.
Thousands of workers were needed, because everything was done by man-power. at that place were no machines or automatonlike power. The dirt for filling a dip or a gorge in the ground was brought in by give-up the ghost cart. Many of the places we had to fill in were hundreds of feet high and a quarter of a mile in length.
Many of the workers were veterans of the Civil War, others were from Ireland and other European countries. At first these men refused to work with us. unmatchable of the foreman, Mr. Stobridge, convinced them to give us a chance. After a few days of seeing us work, everyone agreed they should strike as many Chinese as they could find in California. Mr. Stobridge found we worked together as a team, almost neer took breaks, and stayed healthy. Before the end of 1865, there were seven thousand Chinese at work on the railroad in California.
